Handy tips to get the perfect shot

08/04/2020 Amari Lindroos

Are you lacking inspiration? Here are some handy tips to help you get creative when it comes to taking good photos!

Don’t force it

The most beautiful photos are usually candids, this means that the photo just happened naturally, as if you weren’t even there.

This doesn’t mean you should snapping photos of strangers without their consent, though! You should always ask someone for permission before taking a picture of them.

In this case it would be a good idea to hire a model, or a friend who trusts you. It’s really important that they feel comfortable and relaxed while shooting.

This way your perfect shot should happen naturally!

Change up the setting

Indoors or outdoors? Try out a busy city street, a peaceful park in the suburbs or a farm surrounded by a rural landscape… See what works for the kind of picture you want to take. It’s good to have variety when you build up your portfolio.

Think about your concept

What kind of aesthetic are you into? What feeling do you want to evoke or portray through your art? It’s good to keep this in mind when taking your picture.

Think about how you can dress up your background or your model. Do you want to try out certain props, poses, expressions, maybe have them wear creative makeup or a cool outfit? It’s almost like setting up a stage and actors for a play. Remember: Always keep a model’s feelings in mind and make sure that you’re both on the same page during a shoot!

Play with lighting

Natural lighting, Artificial lighting, flash, or no flash? It’s good to see what each option adds (or subtracts) to the shot.

Switch things up

You don’t always need to rely on a fancy camera to take a good picture… Try experimenting with your smartphone and see what you can do!

Experiment with effects

Playing with certain effects, filters using programs like Photoshop can really enhance a picture. This does require a bit of technical skill, but this skill can greatly benefit the way the final product turns out.

Don’t get discouraged

This has to be the most important tip of them all! You may feel overwhelmed by all the functions on your camera if you’re a beginner… or maybe you’re lacking inspiration and are frustrated at every single picture you take lately... It’s important to take a little time every day to practice and strengthen your skills. It may sound cliché, but don’t give up!
